If you have them set down due to farming, I assume you are expecting mainly tier 1 attacks such as barbs, archers etc. The defence AI is so terrible they will all continue to shoot the same troops as the xbow, thus defeating the purpose of the range.

If it is pointing 45 degrees in the air it is set to air and if it is pointing horizontally it is set to ground. In war, you can select them and check the range. That will tell also. If they look tilted upward, they are on air and if they are more horizontal, they are set to ground.
